If you are stopped by the occupiers

  • Behave calmly, don't argue, don't make sudden movements. If you are asked to show the contents of your pockets or bag, slowly show it to them. Always keep your hands where they can be seen.
  • Don't voluntarily enter the premises where the occupiers are located, and try not to stay alone with the occupiers.
  • Try to always have witnesses with you when communicating with the occupiers. They can see that you are being detained and inform your family if the situation worsens.
  • If you know that you are likely to meet with the occupiers, notify someone you know by phone or SMS in advance. But immediately delete the SMS message from your phone after sending it.
To reduce the probability of detention, never carry items that contain any data related to the occupiers, those who cooperate with them, businesses, infrastructure (roads, train stations, bridges). This may be considered as intelligence gathering. You should also not carry any propaganda materials, pro-Ukrainian literature, or instructions.  Dangerous information that shouldn't be stored on your phone and should be deleted immediately:
  • correspondence with representatives of the Defence Forces of Ukraine;
  • contacts that may raise additional questions;
  • photos or videos of the occupiers' equipment or personnel, secret or sensitive facilities;
  • Ukrainian symbols.
The contents of the phone that don't arouse suspicion – photos of everyday life, leisure, neutral correspondence with friends. A completely clean phone looks suspicious, as if you have something to hide. Sign contacts that are important to you with fictitious but realistic names, and delete unnecessary ones. Don't post information on social media profiles that the occupiers may not like. Delete information about visits to Ukrainian resources from your browser history, along with your social media history, and your likes for Ukrainian content. If you cooperate with the Ukrainian Defence Forces, it is best to have a different phone for this purpose and use it to transmit information.
