In times of war, close ones should take special care of a newborn. But how to do this to the sound of sirens or in a bomb shelter? After all, childcare must be provided under any circumstances. For example, in the basement, without a nappy, when there is no access to care products at all. You can’t bathe a baby in extreme conditions either. Motherhood during war is not an easy path. It is important to keep breastfeeding. Not only does it provide nutrition for the child in the absence of food, but it also eases the psychological state of the infant.

How to calm a child during a siren? How to take care of a newborn in a shelter? Svitlana Martynova, a consultant on breastfeeding and natural motherhood, spoke about this.

  • Do newborns feel war?

Newborns can feel war if their mother is stressed because of the hostilities. Therefore, the mother should take care of herself and remain calm. Until the age of 7, a child stays in the mother’s field and feels all her emotions even from a distance.

If the mother is not present in the bomb shelter, there should be an adult who takes on the functions of a mother. It is important that it is one person whom the child knows by smell and gets used to their voice. When a child is passed from hand to hand, it is a stressful factor.

It is important to provide 4 basic needs of a newborn: to eat, sleep, go to the toilet, and have a lot of physical contact with a loved one.

  • How to ensure the hygiene of a child in a shelter?

When changing a nappy, you can use wet wipes to clean the child. This is especially effective if there is no access to water. Small children don’t have sweat glands yet, so they don’t get dirty quickly. You can use warm water or wet wipes to clean the child’s body folds. In general, this is basic baby body care.

  • What should a newborn emergency bag contain?

First of all, pack enough nappies, swaddles and change clothes. Wet wipes are also important. The main thing in this situation is for the mother to take care of herself. After all, she has to convey calmness and confidence to the child. Mother should be warm, she shouldn’t be hungry. Take tea in a thermos – something that calms and relaxes. After all, the mother needs to constantly breastfeed their children, put them to bed, and hold them a lot. Therefore, you should not take many devices with you. The main thing is to pack an emergency bag for the mother. So that she has everything she needs for convenience. Then the mother will be able to take care of the child properly.

  • How to preserve milk in a stressful situation?

To preserve milk, you need to take care of yourself. This will help you relax and produce oxytocin and prolactin. You also need to put your baby to the breast a lot and often. The breasts work according to the principle: the more the child holds the breast, the more milk is produced. This is a hormone-dependent process.
